Server models – your opinion!

Recently, there have been some new hardware releases which also could be very interesting for servers. In this blog entry, we would like to ask for your feedback on the current AMD and Intel lineup. For that reason, we have prepared four sample server configurations.

Given the choice between the following four options, which server would you buy?

We would be thrilled to hear why you would prefer a certain model over another one. Or is there an entirely different configuration which you would be interested in? Feel free to post in the comments for this.

Looking forward to hearing from you :-)!

  1. can someone explain me why do you prefer AMDs instead of Intel’s

i think intel has more quality than amd and is always in front of the technology.
ok i mean both last 5 years haven’t showed anything really stronger than their previous products
mostly its a battle for overclocking and no big news from them
but still i think intel deserves it.

  2. Dear Paranic,

Thank you for your comment. I feel the same way: Performance-wise, Intel has an edge. This was especially true for the Core2-era. However, with the Opteron Magny-Cours and the Thuban-Phenom (the two CPUs in this survey), AMD has put out some decent new products. The current pricing is what makes things very interesting. If one can get a 8-core AMD for a better price than a 6-core Intel, it’s not so obvious which combination is the best. Personally, I don’t have a favourite in this survey, I like the new AMD CPUs very much and I am an Intel-enthusiast. So, I am very curious which one you will favour!

    Best Regards,

    Mike

  3. I would take the server for 109 EUR per month.

I’m involved in care (old people and hospitals) and also like a lot of blogging and I would certainly have a lot of space and power! Sufficient space and power for a reasonable eyeOS would be there too!

  4. The unique option that I consider it will make a good change is the 229 EUR server.

The other ones are similar to the actual i7 server you offer.
Why most of the people voted for the actual i7 server you offer?

But I should also suggest you to consider adding Intel Xeon servers.
This processors are designed specially for servers, Core i7 ones are designed for general use.
So Intel Xeon 5600 and 6500 series could be a good option too.

  5. +1 for dual cpu hardware

    Xeon dual 5620 or 5630

or the new opteron 4100 in dual not expensive and very perf and more frequency than 6xxx series

970/980 are very nice CPU but the price…
