Impressions of the cooling system at our data center in Nuremberg

This year, as we have proudly informed you earlier, we won the German Data Center Award for our data center in Nuremberg. An independent jury awarded us first place in category 6: "Increase in energy efficiency through reconstruction in an existing data center"

Today, we show you some impressions from our cooling systems. Day and night, they ensure that thousands of servers receive reliable air-conditioning in our data center in Nuremberg. 🙂

 

These pictures show you our redundant air-conditioning systems. They are highly efficient and state-of-the-art machines and use external air for cooling - leading to significant savings in energy consumption.

There you can see our double-pumping plant. It transports the cooling water into the data center. Should it ever fail, the second one will take over instantly and ensure that your servers will always receive the best cooling.

Number of the month: 2 + 7 = Decent Temperature!

Outside, red hot and tropical weather conditions, but the servers located at Giga-Hosting's datacenter, always keep a 'cool processor'. Thanks to 7 climate cabinets in our datacenter and to 2 cooling units on the roof top, a consistent decent temperature is kept, to care for the servers on our server floor.

In April 2011, the second level of our air conditioning system was implemented and this upgraded the former cooling capacity by another 150%.

7 Air Conditioning Cabinets / Recirculation Cooling Units

The 7 air conditioning cabinets are mounted in our data center on various locations. Our recirculating cooling units absorb the warm air stream exhausted by our servers on the ceiling level of the datacenter. This air is afterwards chilled by cold water, which is pumped through two cooling units on the roof top of the building and taken down to the server floor again. The cooled air will then be blown out through the grills of our double layered pressure floor directly underneath the servers.

2 Cooling Units

The 2 cooling units are roof top mounted, directing towards Munich's centre. The warm water from the data center is pumped up to cooling units above. It gets chilled in there and is being pumped down again to the datacenter below. If the temperature outside is cooler than at the inside, air condition is not only controlled by compressors but also substituted by using ambient air. Such results in energy savings and therefore cost reductions. Giga-Hosting's clients do definitely benefit from this effieciency directly.

This 'free-cooling', permanently remote controlled system disposes of 2 water circulations, separated from each other. In fact, two completely independent and redundant systems in each aspect are implemented. All pipes and drains for the air conditioning, but as well all electrical wiring was installed twofold. That stands to reason that we keep consistent decent temperatures in our datacenter for the server's "wellness".  Equally do the employees at Giga International feel well, as they are taken care of by chilling them in air conditioned offices and pampering them with ice cream and cooled soft drinks.

Zahl des Monats: 2+7 = Angenehme Termperatur!

Draußen ist heiß und tropisch. Aber die Server im Rechenzentrum von Giga-Hosting bewahren immer einen "kühlen Prozessor". 7 Klimaschränke/Umluftkühler im Rechenzentrum und 2 Kühlaggregate auf dem Dach sorgen für gleichbleibende angenehme Temperatur im Rechenzentrum.

Seit April 2011 haben wir die zweite Klimastufe für das Rechenzentrum implementiert. Damit wurde die Klimaleistung um nochmals 150 % erhöht.

7 Klimaschränke/Umluftkühler:

Die 7 Klimaschränke sind im über 300 qm großen Rechenzentrum verteilt aufgestellt. Die Umluftkühler saugen die durch die Server erwärmte Luft auf Höhe der Decke des Rechenzentrums an. Die Luft wird dann durch kaltes Wasser gekühlt, das von den 2 Kühlaggregaten nach unten in das Rechenzentrum gepumpt wurde. Die gekühlte Luft wird dann durch den dichten Klimadruckboden direkt bei den Server wieder ausgeblasen.

2 Kühlaggregate:

Die 2 Kühlaggregate befinden sich auf dem Dach mit Blick auf die Frauenkirche im Münchener Zentrum. Das erwärmte Wasser aus dem Rechenzentrum wird nach oben auf das Dach zu den Kühlaggregaten gepumpt. Dort wird es abgekühlt und wieder nach unten in das Rechenzentrum gepumpt.  Die Kühlung erfolgt nicht nur über die Kompressoren, sondern auch, wenn es draußen kühler als drinnen ist, über die Außenluft. Dies führt zu Einsparungen bei den Energiekosten, die dann auch an die Kunden von Giga-Hosting weiter gegeben werden können.

Das freikühlende und ständig remote überwachte System hat zwei getrennte Wasserkreisläufe. Es existieren zwei in jeder Hinsicht eigenständige, redundante Klimatisierungssysteme. Sämtlich Rohre für die Kühlung und auch die elektrischen Zuleitungen sind doppelt gelegt. Dadurch herrschen im Rechenzentrum immer gleichbleibend angenehme Temperaturen und die Server "fühlen sich wohl". Aber auch die Mitarbeiter von Giga-Hosting bewahren durch eine Klimatisierung der Büroräume, durch Eis und kühle Getränke auch bei schwierigen Anfragen einen kühlen Kopf.

100 % Freecooling in June!

It's summer in Munich. Although today it's a rather rainy day and the temperature isn't higher than 15 degrees during the day, it's still June and it's still one of the warmest months in the year.

With respect to the facts mentioned above it seems even more remarkable to me that both of our fully redundant air conditioning systems located on the roof of our datacenter are working in the freecooling mode (100% freecooling) right now.This freecooling mode means that there's not running a single compressor in the cooling chillers to cool down around 1500 servers in our datacenter today. The whole cooling process is done by using the cooler air from outside to cool down the water of our refrigerant curcuit. There are some pumps and ventilators left which are responsible for transporting the water and air from outside into our datacenter. But nothing else, no more power consumption.

As there's not running any compressor in our chillers at all, we're saving lots of energy. There's no doubt that we usualy save this energy during the winter and during the colder months in autumn and spring, too. However, our modern and high-quality cooling units are good enough to save this energy even during the summer - just like they are doing right now. And these savings are pure money what we redirect to our customers by making great prices and providing excellent services with highly-educated personal on site. It's a typical "win-win-situation". But in this case, we have 3 winners: The customers, the datacenter and our environment.

Conditioning cabinets arrived and mounted

Additional cooling cabinets for our datacenter have arrived.

They have already been mounted. Right now we're starting to install the additional cool water canalization to the top of our building and the electricity.

Cooling capacity will be expanded by 150%

Continuing growth of our server fleet does not only require more space. It also demands an expansion of our cooling capacities. Such is necessary to eliminate the electrical energy, which is transformed by our servers almost 1:1 into temperature. During the hot months in summer, everyone has certainly already experienced sometimes the rising temperature in a room where even only a simple PC is operated and has wished for a computer system that behaves "neutral" to the generated warmth. Our datacenter holds way above 1.000 constantly operating server systems by now and directly related to this is the warm air exhaust as one can easily imagine.

Even though our present air conditioning could still cope with many more servers, as it had been originally built to handle up to 1500 servers, we intentionally do not want to bring our recent climate control to it's limit. Instead we are commited to guarantee a failure free system operation around the clock for our clients.

This stands to reason that we will launch the second level of our air conditioning, as scheduled during the next 12 weeks and thereby upgrade the present cooling capacity by another 150%. Afterwards we can set up 2.000 additional dedicated machines while the temperature will remain 'cool' in the true meaning of this word.

Just like before, with our first level of climate control, also this second one will be technology- and enegywise top of the notch. With the assistance of free cooling systems mounted on the rooftop of the building, this new extension will equally use the outside air for cooling down the data center. The water temperatures are being therefore adjusted to a level, that even in summer the free cooling remains active. It will therefore not be necessary, during many times, to engage the power consuming mechanical cooling system. Our new climate control will be working extremely efficient in regards to energy. This not only protects the environment and saves costs, but is also beneficiary to our clients as we directly pass on those savings to them. A 24/7 surveillance of all systems via webserver, smoke detector, water intrusion detection and the like is standard of course.

For the expansion of our cooling capacities we will be setting up a completely isolated cooling circuit, which is operating totally independant from the primary one. This means that we do not only lay all the pipes, but all the electrical wiring another time around. Additionally, recirculating air coolers within the data center itself and a new cold water aggregate on the roof of the building will be installed. The result: Two independent, redundant climate systems by all means.In the most unlikely event that one system should fail - regardless why and which part of it - the other one takes over and keeps on running.

That is how we define high availability and a maximum of safety for the servers of our clients. This upgrade requires again a substantial financial investment which we however pleasantly accept to the benefit of our customers. At the same time, the prices of our servers and services are not raised by a single cent.
