Server caught flirting

Yesterday we have been informed by one our clients that spring fever does not only exist among human beings but probably also among servers - to be more precise, among two of our servers located in our data center.

The following has happened to the client's server:

Today we wanted to perform some renames over a mounted webDAV. Controlling the syslog I recognized that the main hobby of my server is the communication with another DHCP server.
Maybe the two servers were flirting with each other? In my opinion this is rather brazen without my consent, isn't it 🙂
Can you maybe give me a hint why my server behaves so strangely?

The request was not only amusing for our supporters, but also has encouraged them to think about the behavior of a server at the beginning of spring.
Maybe we should stop to consider servers merely as things and objects and should rather deal instead with their feelings in a serious way?

Anyway, a big thank you to our client who has approved the publication of his humerous description of a legitimate question that has caused loud laughter in our office.
Of course, we could find an appropriate solution for his request.

CHIP hotline test: top rank for Contabo

Having been awarded by Deloitte last week, Contabo was honored this week once again.

CHIP, a well-known IT magazine in Germany, has tested 250 different customer hotlines in different categories by means of several test calls over a period of three months.

As part of the CHIP “Hotline Test 2015” Contabo actually emerges as the winner in the category “speed” among several tested hosting providers from Germany. No other hosting provider than Contabo was available within so many different times of day and night and was able to offer such a fast reaction time to its customers.

Even beyond the category “speed” our service could convince the neutral testers of CHIP. Among 15 tested hosting providers our service hotline has achieved the 2nd place.

Oktoberfest 2014

As every year the Contabo company joined the Oktoberfest – a must for every Munich based company. And so, two days ago, we all met in the Hofbräu tent where we have reserved three tables in the middle of the tent. You can imagine how great the atmosphere has been.

Together with our colleagues of Nuremberg who came all the way to Munich to join us, we enjoyed good food and a couple of glasses of beer (or maybe more 🙂 ).
OktoberfestWe would like to say thank you to our management team who made this merry evening possible, but also to those colleagues who kept up the support in the meantime during the others were celebrating and dancing on the beer benches.

I love Free Software Day

I love free softwareToday we don't celebrate Valentine's day - we rather celebrate the "I love Free Software Day" at the Contabo office. On this special day we do not buy overpriced flowers, we rather would like to say thank you to all programmers out there for their hard work providing free software to us day by day. 10 years Contabo in pictures: Part 3

The first and second part of my overview about the history of Contabo was about our beginning on the hosting market and our rapid and continuous growth up to the year 2007.

Now let's move to 2008.

Please find again on the chronicle below what has happened in 2008:

Contabo through the ages

In 2008 we relocated more than 700 servers from Frankfurt am Main to another data center location in Dreieich near Frankfurt, which was 15 kilometers away from the old location. After extensive planning (all customers were informed more than on time), the relocation has been executed, of course, at night in order to bring all servers online again within a short time.
Our removal team stayed in a small hotel in Dreieich for 2 nights, built up dozens of racks, connected them with cables and prepared everything for the new servers. Thanks to their continuous hard work for 2 days and nights, our customers haven’t been affected much.
Once the relocation had been completed and after all the efforts had been finished we had dinner at a little Greek restaurant in Dreieich. Although the Bifteki there was great and a cold beer helped to feel better 😉 some of us even fell asleep during dinner, right at the table.

Anyway, all the effort was worth it, because every server went online again in Dreieich without any complications and within a short time.

Reasons for the relocation were among other things the good collaboration with Tiscali, an ISP that operated under the name “Nacamar” at that time. Just like our second server location in Munich that we operated at the same time, our new data center location in Dreieich was built and provided by Tiscali - and exclusively used by us.
These two locations gave us and Tiscali the possibility to benefit from each other: Tiscali's previous investments into the data center infrastructure worth millions of Euros hadn’t been for nothing but had been used by us for our increasing number of servers; and thus this has been very lucrative for both us. Our further growth was secured and we were able to offer top quality service to all of our customers.

Nonetheless, in the same year, we already worked on our new goal and initiated the merging of all our servers in just one location.
We planned and designed our own, new, big and modern data center location in Munich. In a modern office building on two floors we found the appropriate location for our plan.
On the first floor, that was bigger than 300 sqm, the data center area should be located; the floor above should include the office area and service area for our customer support department and for our technical staff.

In spring 2009 our plan became reality and several specialist firms started with their work, like mounting the double floor, electricity, air-conditioning and so on. Everything was directed by us.

Finally, in April 2009 our new data center in Munich with room for up to 4000 servers has been put into operation and our former data center locations in Dreieich and Munich were closed.
Since that time 5 years have passed and we still host all of our customer servers at that place. “Our servers” have already reached the number of 2500 machines – “our customers” are about to outnumber 10.000 from all over the world.

Thanks to our professional technicians we guarantee a smooth data center operation, twenty-for-seven. Our support team, which is responsible for competent instant service and individual requirements one may have, is available daily from 8am to 11pm via email (support@contabo.com) or by phone (local number). The office is occupied on 365 days a year including holidays and weekends.
We are dedicated to provide a response time of less than 1 hour, no matter what issue is concerned. This is what we call customer service made by Contabo!

Contabo Server Status

We are working continously hard to improve the infrastructure of our data center although it is already very reliable. Furthermore, we have a lot of control mechanisms which are detecting problems even before they might have an effect at all.
However, despite these security mechanisms we can not entirely eliminate the risk of short temporary interferences. A data center with an availability of 100,00 % within a timeframe of several years simply doesn't exist.

Therefore, we have just released our new website http://www.contabo-status.com. On this new website we will inform you about interruptions in our data center in realtime. Following this website would ensure that you will get informed und updated in case there is any kind of general issue which also might have an effect on your server.

Even though you probably won't need this website very soon - hopefully never - we recommend you to bookmark http://www.contabo-status.com right away. In case of doubt you will then be informed about the current status and progress with regard to your server without a delay.

High demand for our VPS and Dedicated Servers!

Short after our company name change we reduced the prices of our dedicated and virtual servers and some of our upgrades.
Since last week our high-end server “Dedicated Server X”, which includes a powerful Intel Core i7 3930K processor, 64 GB DDR3-RAM and 256 GB SSD with 6 Gbit/s + 3 TB HDD, can already be ordered at the ridiculously low cost of 109.99 EUR/ month.

From the everyday life of a Giga-International supporter….

telephone with Question markIt really needs to be said here - we have real full-blooded supporter in our team who strive with heart and soul for the welfare of our customers. And that's not always easy - as you can imagine.
It really takes some good nerves to calm down a choleric customer on the other side of the phone, or to explain a Linux beginner the complex world of Linux in order to serve its Linux-based operating system.

But the job also has many funny sides, and one of them I would like to tell you briefly:
Some time ago there was a special request in our ticket system:

Hello Giga-International team,
I have got an idea: What would you say if I am getting a tattoo that shows the logo or URL of Giga-International, for example on my arm, neck or temple. If you are interested in my plan what would it be worth to you. The tattoo, your logo or your URL, would be decorating my body for the rest of my life. It would be a very lucrative advertising space, since I travel a lot and this would attract much attention, and certainly this will bring you many new customers.
