Debian & Ubuntu Upgrade

At Contabo, we always offer you the latest version of many popular Linux operating systems. This tutorial shows you how to upgrade from an old version to the latest Debian (stable) or Ubuntu LTS.

Before proceeding make sure to have a local backup of all important files, the upgrade might fail and your server becomes inoperable!
In case you are upgrading a VPS with 100% SSD, creating a prior snapshot will be sufficient for backup.
The upgrade really depends on the customization performed on the system and the amount of software installed. The higher the amount of additional software, the higher the risk of package-conflicts which need to be solved manually.

1. Preparation

The system needs to get all pending updates for your software packages, prior to proceeding. If you have not installed updates recently this might take some time.
Packages which were installed due to dependencies and are not needed anymore should be deleted as well.

:~#apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y
:~#apt-get autoremove

2. Adjusting the apt.conf (Debian)

The following commands will replace "stretch" with "buster" in any repository entry.
In case you manually added additional repositories they might fail, you will have to manually investigate or disable those package sources.

:~#sed -i 's/stretch/buster/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
:~#sed -i 's/stretch/buster/g' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

Usually there should be no additional package sources configured and your sources list will have the following configuration:

:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://asi-fs-n.contabo.net/debian buster main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://asi-fs-n.contabo.net/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free

3. a) Start upgrade (Debian)

The following commands will start the upgrade and will also update the packages.

:~#apt clean && apt update
:~# apt upgrade -y
:~# apt dist-upgrade -y
:~# apt autoremove
:~# cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)"
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
VERSION="10 (buster)"

3. b) Start upgrade (Ubuntu)

Ubuntu has got a Tool/command for this purpose: "do-release-upgrade" it will update to next available LTS version, so 14.04 LTS to 16.04 or 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS.
In case the command was not found and the tool is missing, it can be installed with following command:

:~# apt-get install update-manager-core

4. Restart server

In order to use the recently installed kernel, you will have to reboot your server. After rebooting you are running the latest version of Debian (stable)/ Ubuntu LTS.

In case of any issues or inquiries, our customer support team is available to assist you.

Dedicated Server: 10 Gbit/s-port available

From now on and by your request, we offer you an internet connection of 10 Gbit/s (for every server) for our dedicated servers Dual Xeon and 10-Core.

With this upgrade, your server will receive an Internet uplink of 10 Gbit/s (=10.000 Mbit/s) instead of the regular port. We use a high-quality network card from Intel in order to provide you with that bandwidth.

This upgrade is especially suited for customers who generate traffic peaks, which exceed the standard connection of 1 Gbit/s.

You can add the 10 Gibt/s-port for 99.99 € /month plus a one-time setup fee in the same amount. New customers can select the upgrade during the order process of the respective dedicated server on Contabo.com.

Do you already have a dedicated server and would like to add this upgrade? No problem at Contabo! Existing customers can order this upgrade at any time. Please contact our customer support department and specify your wish.

Limited offer: 4 x 4 TB disk space via RAID 10 at only 59.99 EUR / month

We have reduced the price for one of our most popular server upgrades, the 4 x 4 TB HDD RAID 10 bundle! Instead of 79.99 Euro per month, it is now available at a stunning 59.99 Euro per month!

Important for you to know: It pays to be quick as this special price is available for only a short time, as long as stocks last!

If you require a huge amount of disk space for your server at Contabo, combined with an outstanding performance and an extremely high reliability, our RAID bundle with four 4 TB HDDs is the best solution for you. This upgrade features four extremely reliable HDDs by HGST. These disks are constructed explicitly for 24/7 usage and have a capacity of 4000 GB per HDD. The HDDs are connected via an Adaptec or LSI RAID controller as a hardware RAID 10. This means that even in the highly unlikely case of a disk failure, your data will be safe. At the same time, you profit from clearly better I/O.

As you know such a combination of powerful state-of-the-art hardware is generally not cheap. That is why this upgrade did cost 79.99 EUR per month, up to now. Only for a short time, we can offer it at just 59.99 EUR per month - Take advantage of this one-time opportunity and grant your dedicated server at Contabo the 4 TB RAID bundle!

The 4 TB RAID bundle is available for every dedicated server. The bundle can be ordered as an upgrade for existing or new servers.

Upgrade Satellite feed: Setting it up on your Windows Dedicated Server

We recently introduced the Satellite feed upgrade which allows you to receive transponder signals on your Dedicated Server via the so called SAT>IP protocol. In this tutorial, we want to show you how to configure the Satellite feed on your Dedicated Server.

After you have received the e-mail containing the IP addresses you are ready to start the setup on your machine.

Important: All IP addresses used in this tutorial are examples! Please use for the configuration of your server only the data provided in the e-mail.

First of all you need to set up your network configuration.

1. Connect to your server by using RDP

2. Navigate to your network adapters and right click on the corresponding interface, select "properties"

Important: The upgrade comes with an additional network interface, do not change your already existing NIC or your server will not be accessible anymore!

3. Select the TCP/IPv4 protocol and click on "properties"

4. Now set up your IP address which was sent to you via e-mail.

In this tutorial we use as an example.
Your IP address will not be the same as above, please read carefully the information sent to you via e-mail.

5. You need to add a route in Windows, open your Command Prompt as "Administrator" and type the following:

route print -4

The Command Prompt can be started via "Start" -> "Execute" -> "cmd.exe", alternately the "Execute" dialogue can be opened by hitting "Windows-Logo-Key +R"

On top you will see your adapters, you need to check which adapter was just configured for SAT>IP.

In this example the adapter got ID 19, you will probably have another ID - check the descriptions to find the proper ID.

Once you have figured out your ID you are ready to create the route.

route add mask if <Your interface ID> -p

route add mask if 19 -p

6. Check if the connection was set up properly

The IP of the SAT>IP Server was also sent to you in your e-mail, in this guide serves as an example.

Open the Command Prompt and check if the server replies to "ping":

ping -t

If the SAT>IP Server does not reply, we will provide some further assistance on setting it up properly, just contact our support team.

7. Install third party software to take advantage of SAT>IP

Software which is working with SAT>IP can be found here: http://www.satip.info/products/Software

In our tutorial we will use "DVBViewer", but any other SAT>IP-capable software can be used.

After installing the application navigate to "settings" and enter the IP address of the SAT>IP server.

Now click on "Navigate to configuration directory" and edit the network.ini, you need to insert the SAT>IP server's IP address, which was also provided to you in your e-mail:

[RTSP Network Device]

The setup is finished, save your configuration and restart the application. Now you should be able to watch TV on your Dedicated Server.

New upgrade available: Satellite feed

From now on we offer you another upgrade for all of our dedicated servers and colocation solutions at our data center in Nuremberg: The satellite feed.

With this feature,  you will be able to receive feeds of two satellites (in HD) on your server: Astra 19.2°E and Eutelsat Hot Bird 13.0°E.
Here, we use an additional network card to send the signal to your server via Ethernet, where you can then process it further. Consequently, your standard uplink is by no means restrained by the signal traffic, thus you may use it at the maximum speed.
You are free to switch between Astra and Hot Bird, although you can not receive both signals at the same time. In order to get them both simultaneously, simply order the upgrade twice!
Just like with a regular tuner, you can receive one channel at a time. You can switch between channels, of course. If you would like to receive more than one channel simultaneously, you can simply order this upgrade multiple times. For each upgrade, you will be able to receive one simultaneous channel. Should you have multiple upgrades of this type, you can receive channels of both Astra and Hot Bird at the same time, of course.

The price for the upgrade is set at only 39.99€/month, no setup fee is charged. Not only do we provide all the necessary hardware but of course we also take care of the technical implementation. Simply select the upgrade in the "Services and upgrades" part of the "Customize & Order" section of our servers- and colocation overview

In case you are an existing customers already, you can order this upgrade as well as long as your server is located at our data center in Nuremberg. An order can be placed via e-mail.

All things considered: It never has been easier to use a satellite feed on your server!

From Squeeze to Wheezy like a breeze!!!

Upgrading Debian 6.0 to 7.0

With the release of Debian 7.0 there are two ways that you can have this distribution installed on your VPS or Dedicated servers.

One is the clean installation, this could be done using our customer control panel. This is a complete re-installation, so you will loose all your data. This method is recommended as it will freshly install a clean distribution.

But if your system is not that critical, or if you have somehow a 'clean' system, which means that you have installed software only using package management tools, you have not manually 'tweaked' anything or if you have not installed any additional software using .tar, then you can proceed with the following instructions to upgrade from Debian 6.0 (Squeeze) to Debian 7.0 (Wheeze).

Before we begin a word of caution :  Though we have tested this on a test server here at our Contabo labs, and everything seem to work without any problem, we highly recommend you to create a backup and store it remotely before you begin, just in case.

Complete official instruction to upgrade can be found here.

Bringing your current Debian 6 up-to-date:

Before beginning it is a good idea to ensure your current release is up to date. You can do it using the following commands:

Update and Upgrade

apt-get update

apt-get upgrade

Changing sources.list

Please open your favorite text editor to open /etc/apt/sources.list file

vi /etc/apt/sources.list

and change squeeze to wheezy, after the change my /etc/apt/sources.list file looks like this :

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian wheezy main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian wheezy main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian wheezy-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

Upgrade the System

We follow the upgrade process in the following sequence according to the official how-to.

Update the sources

apt-get update

Minimal upgrade

apt-get upgrade

Upgrade the kernel
You can check the current installed version of your kernel using the following command :

dpkg -l | grep linux-image

my output was:

ii linux-image-2.6-amd64 2.6.32+29 Linux 2.6 for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
ii linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 2.6.32-45 Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs

Upgrading kernel :

apt-get install linux-image-2.6-amd64

next step would be to update grub to be sure that everything works as expected:

update udev

apt-get install udev

Final upgrade:

After all the above steps have been completed, we can upgrade the distribution:

apt-get dist-upgrade

Here you go – have fun with your new Debian 7.0 - you can check your version:

cat /etc/issue

Debian GNU/Linux 7.0 \n \l
